Resume padding
So I joined the student organisation for Business Information System Students, they've been around for a few years and they offer scholarships, internships, and industry contacts. I volunteered to help with the website only to find I'm the only one coming from an IT background, and as such the only one who knows enough about HTML/PHP/SQL to design and build a website with the features they want, and I'll be doing it on my own. I think I impressed the head of the organisation pretty thoroughly as I convinced him that free web based design tools would not be able to match, nor create the feature set he wanted for the website. While this may seem obvious to most he really seemed to struggle with the idea. So why am I giving up more of my free time for this? Because I need stuff to fill my resume, and I'm concerned that I'm not taking full advantage of what USYD has to offer. Any thoughts?. Current Mood: tired | | Monday, July 27th, 2009 | | 12:17 pm |
Birthday
Well, I'm back at university today, my first maths lecture was not too daunting and I'm feeling okay about it, My timetable is not ideal, but it isnt aweful. I had my birthday party this weekend, Jay, George, Terry, Jones, Scott, Wolven, Riv, Ray, Enigma, Moddy, NeoG, Moski, Harley and DDD came along for the celebration. The night started in the dark with Enigma helping out with a bit of dodgey wiring, we soon went out to the restaurant and collected a straggler or two on the way. The restaurant wasnt in an ideal location but the food was above average, for the sake of easy ordering and quantities we went with the all you can eat banquet of butter chicken, rogan josh, and egglpant curry (They were out of dhal!) They also did breads, chutneys and an entree. When we got back I served up the food and got some awesome presents, which were very appreciated!. Everyone seemed to have a good time and all the food turned out wonderfully. Moski, Harley, Jay, and Wolven slept over at mine, and we grabbed a quick lunch then went off to see Harry Potter!, I really enjoyed it, It had been long enough since I read it that the bits they skipped over didnt feel too massive, but I did feel certain elements were cut short. Afterwards George came over again and he, Jay and I had a bit of a greatly needed catchup, it made me realise how much I had missed George during his holiday, and how glad I am to have him back, It's nice to have someone who you can be very honest with without judgement. It makes me realise how lucky I am to have people like George and Jay as friends. To finish with, here is the 9 layer Sabayon raspberry mousse cake I made for my birthday (Courtesy of Masterchef) | | Friday, July 17th, 2009 | | 12:02 am |

Drips and Drops
I've had two semester marks back so far, Databases and Infomation Analysis.
| |
Semester work |
Final Exam |
Total |
| Databases |
90.4% |
63.6% |
77% |
| Info Analysis |
83% |
83% |
83% |
I'm pretty happy with Info Analysis, It would have been great to have gotten that extra 2% to boost me up to a HD but I can live with it. I'm less happy with Databases, as you can see I did very well in the semester quizes and assignments, however my exam mark is pretty pitiful, though overall it's still a distinction, and this was the subject I thought I had failed. I didnt go to a single lecture for databases, and just 1 lecture for Info, but I made sure I went to every tutorial, and did every exercise while reading all the lecture notes, but still, I know people who went to all the lectures and barely passed, so I must be doing something right. For those of you not familiar with the university marking scheme, below 45 is a fail(F), 45-49 is a conceeded pass (CP),50-64 is a pass (P), 65-74 is a credit (C), 75-84 is a distinction (D), 85-100 is a High Distinction (HD). Univeristies dont grade in the same way as highschool assesments do, only 5-10% of students should receive anything other than a credit (Though this depends largely on the faculty). | | Friday, July 3rd, 2009 | | 10:39 pm |
Meets
So, I'm going insane with boredom, Anyone up for dinner during this coming week or next weekend? (11th). Also birthday celebrations will be pushed back by a week as RivFur falls on the same weekend as my birthday and I wont be up there. | | Thursday, June 25th, 2009 | | 6:37 pm |

Fail
So I realise i havent been around much lately, i've been having uni exams with my last one happening tomorrow. I had databases today and i think there is a very good chance i failed, the questions were'nt what i had anticipated. Despite getting the highest grade available for every other assesment in this subject if i get below 40 in the final exam its an automatic fail. In other news im thinking of putting off my next dinner party because there just dosent seem to be the interest there for it. | | Friday, June 19th, 2009 | | 7:48 pm |
People suck + Mushrooms
I got a 30% off voucher for borders, so I printed off 4 copies as there were 4 books I wanted to buy, sadly borders were out of all 4, so I decided to give my vouchers to other people at the store, here were the reactions I received: Older woman: "What ? No, I dont work here, No, what? Oh, Thanks... I guess.." Young woman: "I dont want it... oh.. well... I suppose..." Woman in her 30's: "I thought you could only use 1?" Older Man: "Erf.. Its only for books... well thats stupid" God damn people... Also, secret mushroom dish coming up soon!. | | Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009 | | 1:11 am |
hypocracy
I thought this was a decent video, it uses humour, and sentiment to convey just how ridiculous it is to put someones marriage to a vote, and shows how we're repeating the mistakes of the past. | | Monday, June 1st, 2009 | | 4:47 pm |
Notebook
My laptop is in the shop again, I closed the lid on it last night and the rear left hinge ripped straight out of the back panel of the screen, looks like where the hinge connects with the screen has come undone, and when I tried to close the screen the screen moved, and the hinge didnt. I've dropped it off this morning to be fixed and hopefully they will also replace the screen which has gone dull in the lower left sector of the panel. With any luck I will get it back by Friday, with no luck, Tuesday (Monday being the queens birthday). If it had happened last week (When everything was due at uni) Or next week (Exam prep week) Id be going nuts but as it is I think I can manage without it for a lil while. I'm using a wireless keyboard and mouse to type on my 50" plasma which will be my primary PC for the week, it's taking some getting used to, especially being able to read lil font, but I will live. | | Friday, May 29th, 2009 | | 1:03 pm |
Uni Update
There has been a few interesting developments at uni of late, most notably was my latest maths quiz (Thursday) My lecturer just emailed me to say I got 23/24, and all I had wrong was a + symbol where I should have had a * symbol. She also offered me a written reference if I want it. Math: 5/5, 4.5/5, 11.25/15, 14.4/15, -/60. Total: 35.15/40=88% ISYS: 6/10, 13.5/15, 5/5, -/20, -/50 Total: 24.5/30 = 82% INFO: 8.5/10, 9.5/10, 9.5/10, -/20, -/50 Total 27.5/30 = 92% COMP: 25.5/30, -/70: 85% So yeah, Uni is going well, but I always bomb out in Exams, and I'm not expexting high marks in either of the group assignments I have to hand in (Isys, Info), But overall I'm on 87% which is a High Distinciton ^.^. | | Sunday, May 24th, 2009 | | 10:15 pm |
